Congenital hip dysplasia
This congenital disorder affects approximately 5% of the Czech population. It is often due to genetic
factors and affects the development of the hip socket or the head of the femur (thigh bone). As a result,
the femur does not fit properly in the socket of the hip. Other cases may also involve joint hypermobility
or combinations of all the above. Hip dysplasia is more common in girls than in boys. General screening
o all newborns allows doctors to identify the disorder soon enough to start efficient treatment. If discovered
early, hip dysplasia is usually corrected within the first year of the child’s life. However, if left
untreated or neglected, dysplasia may result in excessive wear and tear of the joint, often leading to
irreparable damage by the age of 20.
